Aromatherapy and Essential Oils

Aromatherapy and Essential OilsAromatherapy essential oils have long been used for both their emotional and physical healing benefits; a soothing ritual that promotes beauty and well-being from skin to soul. As the seasons change, giving way to autumns warm welcome, we naturally gravitate toward reminiscent potpourris that remind us of the fall, like cinnamon, apple, pumpkin and cedar. Whether you’re searching for a new personal fragrance, a soothing at-home steam or a DIY aromatherapy oil diffuser blend, we’ve got all the recipes and tips to help you savor in this season’s aromatic spell.

What is aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy, or plant-based therapy, has been used for thousands of years. Essential oils garnered from Mother Nature have been highly revered for their medicinal, emotional and beauty benefits. There are at least 70 regularly used aromatherapy essential oils available for your blending pleasure in a variety of categories, and today, a bouquet of handpicked fragrances are literally at your fingertips. Here are some of our favorite categories for fall:

  • Woodsy: pine, cedar & tobacco
  • Earthy: oak moss, vetiver & patchouli
  • Herbs: marjoram, rosemary & basil
  • Minty: peppermint & spearmint
  • Medicinal: eucalyptus & tea tree
  • Spicy: nutmeg, clove & cinnamon
  • Oriental: ginger & patchouli
  • Citrus: orange, lemon & lime
If your still wondering “what is aromatherapy?” visit to discover all the different profiles, and order your own starter kit which you can use to craft fragrances for at-home aromatherapy. Your local health food grocer also carries these oils, so you can easily test drive the flavors risk-free and purchase aromatherapy gifts.

If you’d prefer to leave it to the pros, here are some designers who we think matched the perfect autumn blend:
Narciso Rodriguez “Narciso” – a balance of vetiver, musk and cedar

narciso eau de parfum

Christian Dior “Gris Montaigne” – an exotic elixir of turkish rose, jasmine, bergamont, patchouli and amber

gris montaigne

Dolce & Gabbana “Velvet Rose” – a sultry combination of musk, geranium and lily

dolce and gabbana

A facial steam has long been recognized as one of the best skin nourishing treatments when mixed with essential oils. An aromatherapy facial steam stimulates the brain and promotes facial healing for a restorative experience. The heat naturally opens the pores to deep clean oil and dirt while releasing impurities and toxins. Steaming also stimulates blood circulation, which increases oxygen and nutrients to the skin, as well as softens and moisturizes. To prepare, boil 1 liter of water and add a few drops of your chosen essential oils, or ½ cup of fresh herbs like mint, basil, chamomile, rosemary, sage, lavender, peppermint or thyme. Inhale the vapors 12-14 inches away from the source for 5-10 minutes.

For whole-body healing, discover an aromatherapy massage oil, or mix your own for a transcendent experience. We especially love this “Warm Spice Blend” for mental clarity:

Start with Cinnamon (3 drops) + Sweet Orange (14 drops) + Cardamom (5 drops) + Coriander Seed (3 drops) & finish with Jojoba Oil (until desired amount is reached)

We couldn’t complete our “oud” to aromatherapy without delivering some easy, and enticing, DIY aromatherapy ideas. Invite fall into your home this season by simply simmering a mixture of ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen, like fresh or dried orange peels, an apple, cloves, cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, fresh ginger and star anise to. The aromatic blend will envelop in your abode like no candle can.

To make your own liquid or aromatherapy oil diffuser, fill up a glass jar 2/3 of the way with either mineral oil or water (add 1-2 tablespoons of vodka to the water recipe) and a few drops of your selected essential oil aromatherapy blend. Soak 10 reeds in the jar for about 15 minutes, then flip them upside down and let the vapors emanate. This custom aromatherapy gift is a great way to share your love for seasonal scents with friends.
